Brain waves are records of the electrical activity of the brain as measured by
an electroencephalograaph (EEG). There are four kinds of brainwaves:
- Beta (14 to 30 cycles per second) - alert and focussed state, a strongly engaged
mind
- Alpha (8 to 14 cycles per second) - relaxed and alert state, eg. resting or meditating
- Theta (4 to 8 cycles per second) - drowsy state (first stage of sleep or daydreaming,
on autopilot in a routine activity)
- Delta (0.5 to 4 cycles per second) - deep sleep state
In the beta state we are more aroused. Qigong helps the mind to slow down and the
brain waves tend to shift from beta down to alpha or theta waves. This results in
a more relaxed state.
